Pre-authorization means reservation of funds on the customer’s account at the time of e.g., guest’s check-in at the hotel. Pre-authorization transaction does not require physical presence of the card, and is performed on the basis of card data that was made available to you. For you, it is a guarantee of receiving payment in case the guest cancels his stay or in the case of cancellation past the no-cost cancellation time-limit. The funds will not be taken from the card’s account but only blocked, either until the actual payment is made, or cancellation, or expiration of the pre-authorization.
